Frequently Asked Questions.
Licenses, Upgrading, Support
Question: Do I need a network to make Deskman work?

No. Deskman does not require a network to be installed, or used. But an internet connection is recommended to validate licenses and configure Deskman remotely.

Question: The ... option/restriction does not work!

Some restrictions are only effective on some operating systems, or some IE versions. Make sure it should work on your system. If it should but it does not, please contact us.

Question: Which versions of Deskman are available?

Deskman 9 is currently the version to download unless you want to use it on Windows 9x/ME, in which case you need a Legacy version: Deskman Personal or Deskman Pro.

Question: What about Deskman SE?

Deskman SE is now Deskman.

Question: Which Deskman version should I use?

If your computer runs on Windows 2000/XP/Vista you should use Deskman 9, otherwise Deskman Pro 5 which is a legacy version available for Windows 9x/ME.

Question: Deskman won't install in non-administrator accounts!

Correct. Deskman needs to be installed and configured from an administrator account. Furthermore, Vista users will be required to Elevate.

Question: Do you support Windows Vista?

Yes. Deskman 8, and later, works on Windows Vista.

Question: Is Deskman compatible with Group Policy?

Deskman modifies policies system-wide (LOCAL branch on the registry). Thus, some group policies may be overridden by Deskman. Our advise is to use Deskman for security-related restrictions instead of Group Policy.

Question: Do you still support Deskman 5 Pro?
Question: Is there a way to access/configure Deskman remotely?

Yes. Deskman 9.1 (and higher) include a web interface.

Question: Is it possible to use both Deskman and Watchman on the same system?
Question: On Vista if I cancel UAC Deskman is closed?!

Yes, unless you set up a password, which is highly recommended.

Question: What if I forget the password, or the hotkey?

If you have an active license, contact us for assistance, and we will help you recover access to your system.

Question: Do you think Deskman is good enough to stop advanced users?

They'd need to be really advanced users. However, the point is: forget about advanced users. They will overcome security measures no matter what, and it's not worth the trouble. It's all about statistics. How many *advanced* users are in your company? And how many *normal* users? Installing a desktop security tool like Deskman is about what really counts:

  • Wasting zero time on system re-configuration
  • Drastically reducing unwanted software
  • Drastically reducing support-time
  • Keeping users from wasting time and resources on their daily tasks
Question: How easy is it to deploy?

After installing and configuring Deskman, you just need to export the data file and copy it on each system. Now you can also configure Deskman from your web browser. Check the documentation for more details, or contact us for assistance.

Question: What are the differences between Standard and Professional licenses?

Professional licenses include also the ability to:

  • Configure Deskman remotely, from a web browser
  • Use cobranding, i.e. use your logo and company name
  • Obtain priority support
