FAQ - Desktop Orbiter - Centralized Computer Protection and Management

Desktop Orbiter is a centralized solution, and it requires two programs to work: the Control Center, from where to manage and protect other machines, to be installed on the administrator's system; and the Satellite, which processes data from the Control Center, to be installed on each client machine.

Question: Can I have 2 or more Control Centers?

Yes. Desktop Orbiter's communication technology allows multiple control centers to be installed securely, as long as they share the same license key.

Question: Do you support Windows 7?

Yes. Version 8 supports Windows 7.

Question: Is it necessary to have the Control Center (server) connected at all times?

No. Just when you need to send or retrieve data, and for configuration purposes. Satellites are mostly autonomous.

Question: Do I have to install the server on a Windows "server"?

No. Both servers (control centers) and clients (satellites) can be installed on workstations and/or servers.

Question: I've installed a Satellite on every workstation, and a Control Center on my computer. Now what?

Desktop Orbiter should find automatically satellites present on your network. But depending on your network complexity you may need to add satellites manually. Check the Satellite Wizard (F3).

Question: Will I be able to use Desktop Orbiter under a VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

Yes. Try the Wizard to find satellites.

Question: Is it possible to activate the following desktop restriction <...> without changing anything else?

Yes. Just make sure that you leave the <unchanged> mark on all the restrictions, except for the one you want to activate.

Question: When I ping a satellite it returns "disconnected", why?

Check the firewall. It may be blocking access from the satellite to the control center, and/or from the control center to the satellite. The following port range (default) should be opened: 51051-51053.

Question: Desktop Orbiter is limited to 10 machines, how so?

The evaluation version is limited to 10 satellites. But you can purchase a license based on the number of computers that you have.

Question: I'd like to upgrade my license, will I have to reinstall satellites? How does it work?

No, you will not have to do anything special. Upgrading is trouble-free. We will send you a new license key with the total number of licenses. If you had 10 and bought 10 more, your new license will allow you to manage 20 satellites. Desktop Orbiter will recognize old satellites and accept new ones.

Question: What if I forget the password?

If you have an active license, contact us for assistance, and we will help you recover access to your control center.

Question: How can I control remote satellites if they appear via the same single public IP address?

We recommend you to install a VPN, such as OpenVPN.
